Les Cromwell IV et autres... combattirent beaucoup en Europe, à partir du débarquement en Normandie. Ils démontrèrent leur potentiel au sein des régiments blindés de reconnaissance des divisions mécanisées. En fait seule, la 7e division blindée fut complètement ré-équipée en Cromwell avant le jour J.

Cromwell IV and others... fought much in Europe, starting from the landing in Normandy. They showed their potential within the armoured regiments of reconnaissance of mechanized divisions. In fact only, the 7th armoured division was completely re-equipped in Cromwell before the D-day.

Le gros problème du Cromwell, outre son blindage, était son armement jugé insuffisant même pour les Cromwells armés de canons de 75 mm (canon inférieur à celui du Sherman). Pour compenser la faiblesse anti-char du Cromwell, les Britanniques développèrent le Challenger armé du fameux 17-pdr (76.2 mm) mais la mise au point de char fut retardée, et ce fut le Sherman (76) américain armé d'un canon du même calibre qui fut principalement utilisé pour augmenter la puissance de feu des divisions blindées.

The big problem of Cromwell, in addition to its shielding, was its armament considered to be insufficient even for Cromwells armed with guns of 75 mm (gun lower than that of Sherman). To compensate the weakness of anti-tank device of Cromwell, the British developed the Challenger armed with the famous 17-pdr (76.2 mm) but the development of tank was delayed, and it was American Sherman (76) armed with a gun of the same caliber which was mainly used to increase the fire power of armoured divisions.

Les Cromwell compensait leurs faibles capacités anti-chars par leur vitesse et leur maniabilité. Les projectiles de 75 mm américains (lend-lease), utilisés par les Cromwell (75) pénétrait difficilement le blindage frontal d'un Tigre ou d'un Panther et cela même à courte distance. Mais un bon commandant, capable d'utiliser les points forts de son char (vitesse, maniabilité et tourelle à pointage rapide) pouvait détruire un Tigre par une attaque latérale ou par derrière. Les Cromwells étaient également plus endurant et rapides que les Shermans et pouvaient mieux exploiter les percées. La 7e division blindée, progressa parfois de 110 km en une journée après la percée du front de Normandie.

Cromwell compensated their low anti-tank capacities by their speed and their handiness. The American projectiles of 75 mm (lend-lease), used by Cromwell (75) penetrated with difficulty the frontal shielding of a Tiger or a Panther and that even at short distance. But a good commander, able to use the strong points of its tank (speed, handiness and turret with fast traverse) could destroy a Tiger by a assault on sides or back. Cromwells were also more enduring and rapids which Shermans and could better exploit the openings. Sometimes the 7th armoured division, progressed 110 km in one day after the opening of the front of Normandy.
