Cruiser Tank Mark VIII Cromwell

Genesis

At the beginning of 1941, new specifications were emitted, proposing a higher reliability, a protection of the turret increased to 75 mm and 65 mm for the hull, a new gun of 57 mm, a turret ing of 1.52 m in diameter, a weight lower than 24 tons, a more powerful engine allowing a speed of 40 km/h.

Mk.VII CAVALIER

In June 1941, Nuffield was invested of an order of 500 specimens of this new model, was indicated A24 and based on Crusader. This tank was equipped with a engine pushed to 410 hp, was finally named Cavalier. This test was a failure and one was satisfied to use this armoured tank like tank recovery vehicle or like artillery mobile observatory.

Mk.VII Cavalier (A24)

  • Cavalier OP: Tank with false gun and additional radio sets, used like artillery observatory.
  • Cavalier ARV: Tank whose turret was replaced by an bracket with A-shape.

These two conversions of the Cavalier were used to the European theatre.

Leyland during this time, had worked on the A27 project, also based on Crusader. A27 was however equipped with an engine Rolls-Royce Meteor derived from the Merlin of aviation and quite higher than the Liberty engine of the first models. It also kept the same chassis as the Cavalier, if it is not a new gear box. The first model, the A27L Centaur I made its appearance in June 1942. As for the Cavalier it was a relative failure and it was used only for the training of the crews. The vehicles modified in order to ensure missions specialized, in howitzers of 95 mm SPG (Centaur V of close support for infantry), anti-aircraft tanks, artillery observatories, ARV (Armored Recovery Vehicle) and bulldozers were more success and were used operationally on the European theatre.
