Heavy Armored Cars (6-Wheels)

Genesis

The development of the 3-wheels armored cars started in Soviet Union in the thirties on bases principally of American truck Ford-Timken. The production of this truck started at the end of 1931, to the factory Gudok Oktyabrya of Kanavin. To the same era an armored hull was installed on the chassis of this truck to the Rembase n°2 of Moscow (Rembase = repair & maintenance station). About 20 of these armored cars under the designation of BA-27M were produced. A dozen armored cars D-13 based on the same chassis were equally realized to the factory Izhorskij. In 1932, Syachentov proposed the BAD-2 being able to travel on rail but a single copy was produced. Nevertheless the military officers wanted these vehicles were equiped with a medium gun.

BA-I

In 1932, the BA-I (or BAI) was proposed by the factory Izhorskij. This vehicle was equally based on the chassis of the Ford-Timken. The assembly was done by welding and the hull possessed three accesses harbors (on the sides and to the back). TheBA-I was equipped of a cylindrical turret equally assembled by welding, that welcomed a gun of 37 mm (34 rounds) and a machine gun on ball mount. Another machine gun (DT) was installed on the driver's frontal plate. The roof of the driver's post was higher than the one of the combat compartment with the turret, reducing thus the height of the vehicle. Other innovation, the replacement wheels (between the front wheels and the rear running gear) were rotary this that helped the vehicle to cross the trenches and the reliefs. Few copies were produced and they were used all in the Red army.
