Airacobra Genesis

The Bell P-39 Airacobra is an all steel fighter at least atypical relative to standard US designs launched during the second world war. It was used with great success by the Soviet Air Force with which it made the biggest score of individual victories for an American fighter. It was also used by the Royal Air Force, the Free French and Co-Belligerent Italian forces... and of course the United States Army Air Forces.

Developed by Bell Aircraft Corporation, the P-39 was a really innovative design; with an engine mounted in the center of the fuselage (behind the pilot), which was operating the propeller via a long drive shaft, but it was the first American fighter with a trycicle undercarriage (typical of jets). However the lack of an efficient turbo-supercharger enabled it to perform in high-altitude and it will be limited to low-altitude missions. It was particularly hard-hitting in ground attack or against bombers.

P-39N-1 Airacobra

Yet the P-39 was envisaged as a high-altitude interceptor as mentioned in the circular X-609 in February 1937. The aircraft had to have a powerful armament comprising a cannon, a liquid-cooled Allison engine with a turbo-supercharger General-Electric, a tricycle undercarriage, a level speed of 43 km/h (400 miles/h) at high-altitude and to reach 20,000 feet (6100 m) in 6 minutes. The Bell company that had limited experience in the fighter design, though the latter had conducted to YFM-1 Airacuda Model 12 where the V-12 Allison engine was installed in the center of the fuselage behind the cockpit, and the transmission to the propeller was ensured by a transmission shaft passing below the cockpit. This configuration freed the nose of the aircraft and it allowed the installation of a heavy armament, consisting of a gun of 37 mm (1.46 in) Oldsmobile T9 firing across the propeller hub ensuring optimum accuracy and stability. This was unusual because the fighters were always built around an engine, not a weapon system as now on the Bell Model 4. Although devastating, the 37 mm gun was handicapped by a low rate of fire, was prone to blockages and most had very limited ammunition reserves. The 37 mm gun was, however, able to pierce 2 cm armor 2 cm at 450 m. This configuration also enabled to equip the aircraft with a tapered nose, highly aerodynamic and offering high visibility to the pilot (also placed higher than on other fighters). The cockpit access was done via the lateral hinged doors, on both sides of the plane (other unusual arrangement). However, only the right one could be opened from the inside and outside and was used by the pilot to access or evacuate the plane. The right could not be opened from the inside and was therefore used for the emergency evacuation by mechanics only.

The XP-39 prototype made its first flight April 6, 1938 at Wright Field (Ohio), by performing 630 km/h at 6100 m (the altitude reached in 5 minutes). However the high-altitude performances of XP-39 were found to be insufficient. In June 1939, the XP-39 was tested in wind tunnels NACA to find a way to increase the performance, including reducing parasitic drag. NACA and the Army judged that the maximum speed could reach 690 km/h thanks to aerodynamic improvements and Allison V-1710 a single stage engine with a single-speed turbocharger, although the interior was too small for such an arrangement. In August 1939, Larry Bell proposed that the production model is built without turbocharger. Bell engineersthought that this very bulky equipment aerodynamically offered few benefits ... or simply the Bell factories did not have the production capacity and the necessary cash ...? Historians still arise the question.

Nevertheless Army commanded twelve YP-39 for evaluation and YP-39A equipped with a single-speed turbocharger. After several changes including in particular the removal of the external radiator and the turbo-charger, the prototype becomes the XP-39B, which showed better performance. The twelve YP-39 were completed so and by adding two machine guns of 7.62 mm (.30 in) to the two 12.7 mm (.50 in) existing. In the absence of shielding and self-sealing fuel tanks, the prototype was normally 900 kg less than the production models. For the production, the single-stage engine without turbocharger was preserved despite the fall of performance beyond 12,000 feet (3660 m). This took away any chance to the aircraft to be considered as a front line fighter that can provide medium and high-altitude missions. However the plane was easy to produce and maintain. After completed the various service tests, the aircraft was renamed P-45 and an order of 80 aircraft was conducted on August 10, 1939. However the aircraft was quickly renamed P-39C (Model 13) before deliveries begin. After analyzing combat conditions in Europe it was obvious that the 20 P-39C producted already without armor and self-sealing fuel tanks, were unfit for combat. The other 60 aircraft were modified to correct and renamed P-39D. The aircraft now has a solid structure and a shield of 120 kg which further limited high-altitude performance of American fighter ... performances inferior to the contemporary European fighters, but still higher than those of the US F4F Wildcat , F6F Hellcat and P-38 Lightning and Japanese A6M2 Zero. The The P-39D was the first model to enter in service and in action into the Army Air Corps. On the P-39D (Model 15) armament is a 37 mm gun T9 and two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose and four machine guns of 7.62 mm on the wings. The plane could carry in her belly, a 227 kg bomb or a drop tank. This last was very necessary because the lack of space in the fuselage there was no internal tank, the standard fuel load of the aircraft was stored only in the wings. This limited the P-39 to short-distance missions.

As aforementioned, the P-39 was inefficient above the 12000 feet (3660 m) and therefore not usable as conventional fighter in Europe and even more in the Pacific (the ceiling was further reduced due to the warm tropical air, what advantage the Japanese bombers. Late models P-39N and P-39Q (75% of production) could maintain a maximum speed of 604 km / h at 6100 m (20000 feet). The Russian pilots demonstrated that if the weightof the aircraft was poorly distributed it could enter a dangerous flat spin. This could happen especially when there was no ammunition in the front compartment. The flight manual mention the need to ballast the front ammunition compartment ith appropriate weight of shell casings to reach a reasonable center of gravity. The location of the engine in the center did of the P-39 an ideal aircraft for ground attack and dive attack. In fact the enemy barrage fire was less likely reach the engine and cooling system.. but it was vulnerable to fire from top or back attack . For dive it was recommended not to exceed 764 km / h.

Au total, 9588 P-39s de tout type furent construits.

A total of 9588 P-39s of all types were built.
