Le Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausführung E Tiger I fut le premier char lourd allemand produit en série. Bien que le début de son développement soit antérieur au choc procuré par les premiers affrontements entre les Panzers et les T-34/76 russes, le Tiger I sera la première véritable réponse au modèle russe. Ses lignes carrées et assez classiques ne reprenant pas de ce fait la disposition inclinée des parois du char russe novatrice à l'époque. Bien que vertical le blindage du Tigre était épais et lui procurait une excellente résistance au feu de l'ennemi (revers de la médaille, le poids et la consommation qui va avec). Son canon de 88 mm dérivé du fameux canon anti-aérien du même calibre restera pendant toute la guerre une arme mortelle pour tout char ennemi. Le Tigre fit son apparition le 29 août 1942 près de Leningrad. Cependant en raison de son coût, de sa sophistication et une mécanique fragile, le Tigre ne pourra jamais être véritablement produit en masse (1350 exemplaires) et disponible en nombre déterminant au feu. De plus sa faible autonomie ainsi que les difficultés de transport et de récupération, réduisirent son efficacité opérationnelle. Le Tigre était cependant pour son poids un char relativement mobile.

Il est étonnant que les Allemands acceptèrent de se démunir de plusieurs exemplaires de leur précieux char lourd dans ces circonstances. D'autant plus que jusque là ils avaient plutôt tendance à livrer à leurs alliés du matériel périmé et obsolète. Le 22 juillet 1944, 3 Tigres quittent les dépôts allemands pour être livrés par rail à l'armée hongroise. En addition 10 autres Tigres provenant du sPzAbt.503 ou du sPzAbt.509 seront livrés par rail à l'armée hongroise. Une ne compagnie (la 3e compagnie) de Tigres sera formée, au sein de la 2 division blindée hongroise. Durant l'offensive soviétique en Galicie, fin juillet 1944, la compagnie perdra 7 de ses Tigres par manque de carburant.... cependant les équipages de Tigres hongrois réussirent à détruire 22 chars russes.

It is astonishing that the Germans agreed to strip several specimens of their invaluable heavy tank in these circumstances. During Soviet offensive in Galicia, at the end of July 1944, the company will lose 7 of its Tigers for lack of fuel…. however the crews of Hungarian Tigers succeeded to destroy 22 Russian tanks.
