Semoventi da 75/18 Scafo M40/M41 & M42 (Assault Guns)

in Action

The basic unit of Semoventi da 75/18 was the gruppo as within the regiments of artillery of the Italian army. It should be noted that Semoventi were generally assigned to the regiments of artillery of armored divisions and not with the armored regiments. The battle order of the gruppo in August 1941 envisaged 1 command of gruppo with two Semoventi, 2 or 3 batteries with 1 Carro Commando and 4-6 Semoventi each one + 1 unit of supply.

After the campaign of North Africa, Semoventi will be deployed in Europe within DLXIth gruppo (Sardinia) and of DLVIIIth gruppo affected to division of infantry Brennero (Balkans). Ten Semoventi da 75/18 will also take part in the defense of Sicily. In addition to the gruppi of the Regiments of Artillery, Semoventi da 75/18 will be also versed as from September 1942, in mixed units with medium tanks. It was XVth battaglione carri M, the first unit transformed in this way at a rate of 2 companies of M15/42 and 1 company of Semoventi da 75/18. In December 1942, the proportion between the two armored tanks was reversed. Each company of Semoventi was to be constitued of a group of command and three groups of Semoventi. 10th Reggimento Cavalleria Lancieri di Vittorio Emanuele II (Division Ariete II) was made up of 3 mixed groups, including each one 3 squadroni Semoventi and a squadrone M15/42.

On September 9, 1943, Semoventi da 75/18 of Division Ariete II took part in the defense of Rome counter their old German allies. The majority of Semoventi will be recovered by the Germans who will use them in North Italy, under the name of StuG M40 (I) or StuG M41 (I). Some will be also versed in the armored units of the RSI.

This assault gun because of its low silhouette and its gun able with special HE anti-tank round to destroy all allied tanks (with the exception of Churchill) was very popular near the Italian crews and a very effective weapon (in a role of assault gun or tank destroyer (at short distance)) even if it was lower than the last models of German StuG III.
