Panzerkampfwagen I Light Tank

Models: Pz.Kpfw I Ausf.A

Le Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf.

Alongement of the chassis required the adoption of a fifth road wheel and a fourth return roller. The number of track links passed to 100 units. To improve control of the tank, the pulley of tension was assembled higher not to be more in contact with the ground.

Since 1938, it was obvious that Panzer I did not have a sufficient potential to be a "battle tank" and will be versed in the category "tank of reconnaissance" or "tank of infantry". The following models will thus make parts of these categories with completely new designs. Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf.C neuer Art (VK 601) was a tank of reconnaissance produced by Kraus-Maffei and Daimler-Benz between 1942 and 1943. It had a new suspension with 5 axes carrying overlapping road wheels (with rays) and broader tracks. It was armed with a gun of 20 mm EW 141 and with a MG 34 of 7.92 mm (coaxial). The shielding was increased to reach the 30 mm at front and 20 mm on the others faces and 10 mm on the top as with the lower part. A new engine, more powerful, the 6 cylinders (liquid cooling) Maybach HL 45P (gasoline) developing 150 hp to 3800 turns was mounted. This new engine made it possible to the tank to reach on road the 79 km/h!

Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf.D neuer Art (VK 602) was a better armoured that version Ausf.C which will be produced in a very limited number (some prototypes). It had the same armament that Ausf.C but accomodated a more powerful engine, Maybach HL 66 P developing 180 hp to compensate for the increase in the weight 'cause the shielding.

Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf.F neuer Art (VK 1801) is without any doubt the most remarkable version of Panzerkampfwagen I. It acted of a heavy tank of infantry which made its appearance in 1942.

This tank was strongly armoured: 80 mm for the frontal shielding, 50 mm for the sides and the back and 25 mm for the belly and the roof. However its thick shielding strongly limited its mobility: its maximum speed fell to 25 km/h on road. Ausf.F was always equipped with Maybach HL 45 of 150 hp. Its armament consisted of 2 machine-guns of 7.92 mm MG 34.
