Char léger R-35/40

in Action

In 1940, 945 R-35/R-40 formed the framework of the French armoured forces. 810 were used as support of infantry in 16 battalions, distributed in 9 French Armies and 135 were versed in the 4th DCR (Armoured Division of Reserve). R-35 was largely higher than Pz.Kpfw I and Pz.Kpfw II, on the fire power level, and the whole of the German panzers on the level of the shielding. However its impact on the panzerdivisions was very limited because its short gun with low initial velocity (420 m/s) was not a frightening anti-tank weapon and its shielding did not resist to the gun of 50 mm of the most recent Pz.Kpfw III and the gun 75 mm of Pz.Kpfw IV.

Because of its design like tank of infantry, it was extremely slow and its autonomy was very limited. Moreover fault of an autonomous employment, very little was equipped with radios in 1940. At the time of engagements against other armoured tanks, the single-seat turret of the commander-loader-gunner was a heavy handicap. Indeed it was quasi impossible for this last to effectively handle the turret and in more to give suitable orders to the driver. When the radio was installed, it complicated even more work of the poor man. Its work was already very difficult in situation of support of infantry at low speed.

The 35-R as well as the other French tanks, dispersed between the various armies, used according to obsolete doctrines, were obviously condemned in advance and were carried in the storm of a war of a new kind, the mobile warfare.

A great number fell into the hands of the Germans who used them by installing there hinged trap doors of cupola and radio stations. Approximately 200 German R-35 (Pz.Kpfw 35R 731(f)) were used on the Eastern front for reconnaissance missions (100th Panzerbrigade of 21st Panzer Division) because of the serious shortage of tanks overpowering the German troops. In France, they were used by the troops of occupation in police duties. A great number of turrets of R-35 used as artillery tractor were used on the "Atlantic Wall" by the Germans.

The Germans gave to the Italians, two battalions of R-35 not transformed (approximately 124 tanks), which used them against the Americans in Sicily in 1943. In 1938, the Poles bought 53 specimens of R-35 (on an order of 100), which fell finally into the hands from the Roumanians (with other specimens imported of France), who however did not use them in the combat. In all, 240 specimens were exported. Yugoslavia and Turkey accepted some from them.
