Iosef Stalin Heavy Tanks

Conversions

The only true conversion of tanks IS was the ISU-152, a self-propelled gun armed with the howitzer of 152 mm ML-20S assembled on a mounting with limited traverse in a broad front superstructure.

For the remainder, various conversions were the fruit of the installation on the ground of various equipment like anti-mines rollers or various equipment of escavation or pioneer.

IS-4

Succeeded best of these prototypes was the 701-6 which however was accepted for the service only in 1947. However certain specimens of pre-production were delivered in 1945-1946. A total of 250 specimens was realized. They all were almost sent in Far East. In 1949, the production of the IS-4 was removed and the majority of the tanks were withdrawn from the service because of a too heavy weight for the bridges and transport of the time and because of a failing transmission.

IS-5

Several prototypes which were characterized by their armament, the shielding or their turret were developed. The chassis though based on the existing models was equipped with innovations. The IS-5 was never produced and only models out of wooden were produced.
