Type 2 Ho-I Medium (Support) Tank

Le char de soutien d'infanterie Type 2 Ho-I fut développé sur base du Type 1 Chi-He. En fait il c'était plus un canon automoteur pour le combat rapproché qu'un char moyen classique. Il devait pouvoir également seconder le Type 97 Chi-Ha face aux blindés alliés. Après avoir dans un premier temps essayé d'adapter le 75 mm Type 41 de montagne sur le châssis du Type 97 Chi-Ha. Cependant en avril 1941, le choix fut porté sur le 75 mm Type 99 pour chars. Quand les Japonais commencèrent à rencontrer sur les champs de bataille du Pacifique et d'Asie à partir de 1942, des chars américains M4 Sherman et M3 Stuart, ils n'avaient rien de comparable à leur opposer. Il fut donc décidé d'élargir le champ d'actions du Ho-I aux missions anti-chars en fournissant des projectiles perforants au 75 mm Type 99.

En plus du 75 mm Type 99 en tourelle, le Ho-Hi était aussi armé d'une mitrailleuse de 7.7 mm Type 97 sur la caisse. La tourelle était entièrement pivotante ce qui permettait l'usage du Type 2 Ho-I comme char de combat classique également. Au sinon, le châssis était celui conçu pour le Type 1 Chi-He.

En raison de problèmes de livraison de matériel (en raison des bombardements), la production du Ho-I se limita à 30 exemplaires et à la fin 1944, le programme fut annulé. Tous les Ho-Is furent retenus dans l'archipel pour défendre la nation contre une future invasion américaine. Ils ne furent jamais utilisés au combat.

Because of problems of delivery of material (because of the bombardments), the production of Ho-I was limited to 30 specimens and at the end of 1944, the program was cancelled. All Ho-Is were retained in archipelago to defend the nation against a future American invasion. They were never used into the combat.
