Autocarro Leggero Fiat 618

On the northern front, 1358 trucks of this type were used. Many others were used in Somalia. However after exercises carried out in Libya in May 1938, the FIAT 618 was considered to be insufficient for a colonial use because a chronic overheating of the engine, great transmission ratios and an excessive speed. The FIAT 618 was also used during the Spanish civil war (approximately 2000 specimens). During this campaign, various special versions like an anti-aircraft vehicle (with machine-guns St Etienne), an ambulance or a breakdown truck. The FIAT 618 was also used as tractor of artillery for guns 67/15 and 37/45.

Autocarro Medio Fiat 626

The FIAT 626 NM Militare presented to Italian army like a reliable truck able partly to ride in cross-country. Actually, experiment in North Africa revealed serious problems on the level of the engine fuel supply, the maneuverability and also weak lifespan of the truck in absence of oil filters. On the Russian front, these vehicles were little adapted to the hard local winter.

A gasoline version, the FIAT 626 BLM also was developed and also sent in Russia, where it gave better results that the diesel version, especially because of its engine easier to start. A version 4x4 gasoline, the FIAT 625, was still in phase of test at the time of armistice. The version ambulance was largely used by the medical units. Other special versions like tankers and mobile kitchens were developed.

The FIAT 626 was also used by the French Army (700 trucks were delivered before the war, on an order of 1650). At the time of German occupation of North Italy, the priority was given to the version with gas generator. The Germans caused production of a version equipped with a Einheit body, the FIAT 628 NR. The latter took delivery of 3323 trucks in 1944-1945.

Autocarro Gigante Fiat 634

This heavy truck was at the origin intended for a civil use. However it was also chosen by Italian army (vehicles of the 2nd series) because of its lack of heavy trucks. Hundreds of trucks of this type were used during the Ethiopia war. The vehicles of the 3rd series with a more aerodynamic cap, took part in the last combat of the Spanish civil war.

A version 4x4, the FIAT 655 NM was also developed and was adopted on November 24, 1942, with an armored version the 655 NM. This armored version, the autocarro blindato was intended for the North Africa and 300 vehicles were ordered. It is little probable that the order was entirely delivered before the armistice in spite of the delivery of 110 specimens in date of April 30, 1943. In any case none of these vehicles pressed sands of North Africa. The delivered vehicles were sent in Balkans. After armistice some specimens of return of Yugoslavia were seen in Udine. Some specimens were used by the RSI and Wehrmacht.

Autocarro Leggero SPA 36R

This light truck was developed on the basis of Autocarette of mountain in order to replace the hippotracted carts. The CL39 was however faster while remaining very easy to handle. This truck was presented in 1938 under the name of CLF (Carro Leggero per Fanteria) under two configurations different: the first with an engine cooled by air, the second with an engine cooled by water. The model with water cooling was finally selected is subjected on November 13, 1938 to Central Studi Motorizzazione. The CLF was adopted by Esercito in 1939 under the name of CL39. It will be however generally called autocarretta SPA or L39.

SPA CL39

The CL39 was used as tractor for the machine-guns of 20 mm, the anti-tank guns 47/32 and howitzer 75/15. Since 1940, this vehicle was assigned in priority to the gruppi of 75/18 mod.34 (6 by gruppi) thus that to the companies of mortars of 81mm (8 per company) and to those of guns of 47/32 (4 per company) of divisions of infantry. The SPA CL39 which was hardly modified during its career however was declined in a colonial version equipped with air filters and a lowered hull (adopted in February 1941). Very easy to maintain and produce, it was built to 5642 specimens on behalf of Regio Esercito and Regia Aeronautica. It was used for the first time during the army manoeuvres of 1939 then one met it on all fronts during the second world war, except AOI. In April 1941,1170 trucks were present in Balkans. The standard division of infantry type 1940 was to be equipped with 45 trucks. In 1943 this digit went up to 145 (106 for the two regiments of ' infantry and 39 for the divisional battalion of mortars). Wehrmacht took delivery of 198 of them in 1944.

Autocarro Dovunque SPA 41/42

Autocarro Sahariano A.S.37

This light truck was developed in 1937 for the North-African desert. It was based on the chassis of the tractor of artillery TL37. It had a very broad autonomy with vacuum (900 km) and a great capacity of water carrying. It could transport 8 men and their equipment in the back box. It should be noted that the development of truck is own initiative of FIAT and was not a request from Italian army which judged the creation of this kind of vehicle nonurgent. FIAT with supports of the marshal Italo Balbo, governor of Libya, however carried the project in its term. It's thus logically that the 200 specimens of the first batch joined Libya since 1938, and were assigned to Commando del Sahara Libico and to Autogruppo della Tripolitania. The goal of Balbo was to equip (at a rate of 22 vehicles each) the Sahariane companies. In March 1942,584 specimens of this small truck were in service in North Africa. The maximum number of vehicles in service reached was of 802 specimens at April 30, 1943.

The 2nd company was distinguished on January 31, 1941, by the capture of major Clayton, the boss of the legendary British Long Range Desert Group (LRDG). The covered cabin of A.S.37 were often removed on the field because too visible . Many vehicles were equipped with a Breda anti-aircraft gun of 20/65 or an anti-tank gun of 47/32 on rotary platform, in the back box. The 5 Sahariane companies will carry out the retirement of Libya towards Tunisia between December 1942 and January 1943 with their quasi complete strength. They will continue the combat in Tunisia until April 20, 1943. After armistice of September 1943, several A.S.37 will be used by the Germans in Italy of North.

A.S.37 had good press near its crews because of the 4 drive/direct wheels of large diameter which made it possible the truck to be never not imprisoned by sand, of its great autonomy which allowed the realization of missions of long distance, far behind from the frontline. The principal reproach made with this excellent vehicle was its too high silhouette and thus too easily locatable.
