La fameuse "Jeep du Désert" italienne, la Camionetta A.S.42 Sahariana (A.S. = "Africa Settentrionale") fut développée par la firme SPA-Viberti sur base du châssis de l'Autoblinda AB.41. Ce véhicule léger, non blindé, disposait d'un large compartiment central qui accueillait l'unique poste de conduite (l'AB 41 en possédait deux) et l'armement qui variait selon les véhicules. Ce véhicule disposait d'un très vaste rayon d'action (1400 km) grâce notamment aux 20 jerricans d'essence qu'il pouvait transporter sur ses flancs dans les râteliers prévus à cet effet. Le moteur, un SPA Abm 1 essence à 6 cylindres en ligne refroidis à l'eau, développant 100 CV , permettait au véhicule d'atteindre les 84 km/h sur route. L'armement principal pouvait être soit un canon de 47/32 ou un canon anti-char de 20 mm Solothurn ou encore un canon anti-aérien Breda de 20 mm. Il était complété par 1-2 mitrailleuses de 8 mm. Certains véhicules étaient armés seulement de mitrailleuses Breda de 8 mm.

Famous the Italian "Desert Jeep" , Camionetta A.S.42 Sahariana (A.S. = " Africa Settentrionale") was developed by the SPA-Viberti firm on the basis of chassis of Autoblinda AB.41. This light vehicle, not armored, had a broad central compartment which accomodated the single driver's station (AB 41 had two) and ; armament which varied according to the vehicles. This vehicle had a very vast range (1400 km) grace in particular to the 20 jerry cans of gasoline that it could carry onto its sides in the racks envisaged for this purpose. The engine, a SPA Abm 1 gasoline with 6 cylinders in line cooled with water, developing 100 hp, allowed the vehicle to reach 84 km/h on road. Main armament could be is a gun of 47/32 or one anti-tank gun of 20 mm Solothurn or an anti-aircraft gun Breda of 20 mm. It was supplemented by 1-2 machine-guns of 8 mm. Some vehicles were armed only with Breda machine-guns of 8 mm.

Le prototype fut présenté le 9 juillet 1942 et la production débuta en août (le véhicule sera homologué en décembre de la même année). Sur une commande de 140 exemplaires, seulement 100 véhicules seront livrés. Les modèles produits en 1943 seront nommés AS.43. Les premières camionnettes desertica furent affectées au Raggruppamento Sahariano opérant en Libye, au mois d'octobre 1942. 26 exemplaires environ furent envoyés en Afrique du Nord. Les survivantes combattirent en Tunisie au sein de la 103a compagnia du Ier Arditi Camionettisti, avec d'excellents états de service. Les camionettes AS.42 (18 véhicules) furent opposés aux Alliés en Sicile entre juillet et août 1943, au sein du IIe battaglione du X° reggimento Arditi. Chacune de ces compagnies était composée d'un petit QG et de 3 Pelotons de 8 AS.42s chacun. Ces véhicules furent utilisés le plus souvent pour la reconnaissance à faible et moyenne distance contrairement aux véhicules LRDG et SAS britanniques utilisés pour la reconnaissance longue distance.

The prototype was presented on July 9, 1942 and the production began in August (the vehicle will be approved in December of the same year). On an order of 140 specimens, only 100 vehicles will be delivered. The models produced into 1943 will be named AS.43. The first Camionettisti desertica were assigned to Raggruppamento Sahariano operative in Libya, in October 1942. 26 specimens approximately were sent in North Africa. The surviving ones fought in Tunisia within the 103rd compagnia of Ist Arditi Camionettisti, with excellent states of service. Camionettisti AS.42 (18 vehicles) were opposed to Allies in Sicily between July and August 1943, within IInd battaglione of Xth reggimento Arditi. Each of these companies consisted of a small HQ and 3 "Sahariana" Platoons, each of 8 AS Sahariane vehicles. These vehicles were generally used for the standard reconnaissance contrary to LRDG and SAS British vehicles used for the long range reconnaissance.

Les camionnettes du Xe reggimento Arditi et du battaglione d'assalto motorizzato participèrent à la défense de Rome, lors de l'armistice contre les anciens alliés allemands, le 9 septembre 1943. Cependant un petit groupe de 46 Arditi avec 7-9 camionnettes AS.42 accompagnèrent la 2e. Fallschirmjäger Division "Ramke" d'Italie au front ukrainien en novembre 1943, avant de rejoindre l'Allemagne 1943. Le bataillon Barbarigo de la Xa Masde la RSI employa également des AS.42 récupérées à Rome, sur le front d'Anzio Nettuno au début de 1944, puis sur le front de l'Est et en définitive sur le front de l'Ouest en France.

Camionettisti, of Xth reggimento Arditi and the battaglione d'assalto motorizzato took part in the defense of Rome, at the time of armistice against the old German allies, on September 9, 1943. However an small group of 46 Arditi with 7-9 Camionettisti, AS.42 accompanied 2nd. Fallschirmjäger Division " Ramke" from Italy to the Ukrainian front in November 1943, before joining Germany 1943. The Barbarigo battalion of Xth Mas or the RSI also employed two AS.42 recovered in Rome, on the Anzio Nettuno front at the beginning of 1944, then on the Eastern front and ultimately on the Western in France.
