Bergetiger Armored Recovery Vehicle

In November 1944, Tiger I of mid production damaged close to Anzio in Italy was converted by the sPzAbt 508 into a special vehicle of support. Its gun was removed and its turret fixed . On the turret a crane was installed. It was lost between the 20 and on May 25, 1944 and then captured by the British. The polemic in connection with this vehicle like tank of recovery (?) comes owing to the fact that it is considered that his hand winch, handled by the force of the arms of two men was unsuitable for this use contrary to the powerful power winches of Bergepanthers and even of Bergepanzer 38 (t). However Bergetiger as the photographs show it were equipped on the hull nose of a curious device which made it possible to move up tow bars in the shape of V which could be connected to the loops of towing of a standard Tiger. The standard Tigers were equipped in theory with cables to tow another Tiger but a Tiger tank with its engine of 700 hp was just able to move its own weight of 57 tons, and was unable to tractor draw another Tiger only on a few kilometers. In fact its cables were used for just to release emsabled Tiger or a Tiger fallen in a ravine and preferably with two other Tigers minimum. The Germans used also three tractors FAMO (Sd.Kfz.9) to recover the broken down Tigers but to direct such an "exceptionnel" convoy was hazardous, especially in the curves. In fact the transport and the recovery of the Tigers tanks always posed large problems to the Germans. Consequently which use could have Bergetiger. One can think reasonably that the suppression of the weapon-system, the ammunition and the hydraulic system of rotation of the turret got for the vehicle an appreciable profit of weight (1-2 tons?). Moreover it was necessary to preserve 5 crewmen ? A driver and two mechanics were to be enough not. Under these conditions the vehicle could lay out an improvement of his power (engine)/weight, which could get a greater capacity of traction and that to it at a longer distance (which was not to be enormous however). In spite of the whole the fact that contrary to other Bergepanzers one has to preserve the turret of the Tiger is astonishing. It is not useful now, in fact and to lay out a winch swivelling directly in the empty turret basket or on the turret ring would have been definitely more judicious in my humble opinion.

The crane was very right limit to realize tasks of workshop like withdrawing engines. Many medium tanks were available to be equipped in bergepanzer (only the motorization posed one (large) problem), why a Tiger, too much invaluable like battle tank. However one cannot completely give up the role of standard vehicle of recovery, because another heavy Bergapanzer was created on the basis of chassis available of the abandoned Tiger of Porsche (was also used to for Ferdinand/Elefant). Bergepanzer Tiger (P) (SdKfz.181) did not have turret any more , but a small rear armored superstructure. It was equipped with an a crane even more fragile than that of Bergetiger, but also like it of tow bars, but was lighter. Bergepanzer Tiger (P) was produced to about 15 specimens. These vehicles at a rate of a vehicle per battalion, equipped the battalions of heavy tanks (Tiger I) and with heavy Panzerjägers (Ferdinand/Elefant). One can think that the Germans preferred to use Bergepanzer Tiger (P) which it did not deprive them of battle tanks contrary to Bergetiger. Bergetiger was produced at three specimens only. Bergetiger was very limited like genuine tank of recovery. It is for me rather a vehicle of support in zone of combat, to realize small fast maintenances and at most to tractor draw on a few hundred meters (out of reach of a direct shooting) a damaged Tiger. Let us recall that contrary to Bergepanzer Tiger (P), Bergetiger is and remained a field conversion.

Other ideas: Bergetiger was intended to transport explosive loads? Surely not heavy loads because the lack of sufficient protections, would have been much too dangerous for two poor guys charged to operate the winch. It is more probable than the crane of Bergetiger was used to deposit loads of 200-300 kg while offering thanks to the shielding of the Tiger a definitely better protection under the fire of the enemy than that offered by small and light Borgward DCL used normally for this task. Another interesting idea was the use of the winch of Bergetiger to handle a sweeping mass of mines.
