Panzerkampfwagen VII Löwe Heavy Tank

Très vite dès 1941, les Allemands étudièrent le développement de chars super lourds qui quoique d'une utilité tactique peu évidente et très difficiles à produire étaient de parfaits étendards pour la propagande. Krupp fut le premier à s'intéresser à ce genre de char en étudiant les modèles soviétiques. En novembre 1941 , il fut spécifié que ce char devait avoir un blindage frontal de 140mm et latéral de 100mm. Ce véhicule devait être dirigé par 5 hommes comme sur la plupart des modèles allemands. Grâce au moteur Daimler-Benz équipant les vedettes lance-torpille de la Kriegsmarine développant 1000ch cet engin devait pouvoir atteindre les 44km/h sur route malgré un poids de 90 tonnes. Début 1942, Krupp commença le développement de ce nouveau modèle désigné PzKpfw VII Löwe (VK7201). Pour cela Krupp utilisa un design ultérieur, le VK7001 qui pouvait être armé du canon de 150mm Kanone L/37 (ou L/40) ou encore du canon de 105mm KwK L/70. Il fut spécifié que le Löwe devait dans un but de standardisation utiliser le plus d'éléments commun au Tiger II. Deux variantes furent mises au point, l'une légère (leichte) avec une tourelle montée à l'arrière, pesant 76 tonnes et possédant un blindage frontal de 100mm, l'autre lourde (schwere) avec une tourelle montée au centre, un blindage frontal de 120mm et pesant 90 tonnes. Toutes les deux étaient équipées du canon de 105mm L/70 et d'une MG34 coaxiale. La dernière version ressemblait au Tiger II. La vitesse maximum estimée pour les deux engins était de 23km/h pour le schwere modell et de 27km/h pour le leichte modell).

Very quickly since 1941, the Germans studied the development of super heavy tanks which though of a not very obvious tactical utility and very difficult to produce were perfect standards for propaganda. Krupp was the first to be been interested in this kind of tank by studying the Soviet models. In November 1941, it was specified that this tank was to have a frontal shielding of 140mm and side of 100mm. This vehicle was to be to direct by 5 men as on the majority of the German models. Thanks to the Daimler-Benz engine equipping the torpedo boats of Kriegsmarine developing 1000hp this machine was to be able to reach the 44km/h on road in spite of a weight of 90 tons. At the beginning of 1942, Krupp began the development of this new model indicated PzKpfw VII Löwe (VK7201). For that Krupp used a later design, the VK7001 which could be armed with the gun of 150mm Kanone L/37 (or L/40) or with the gun of 105mm KwK L/70. It was specified that Löwe owed with an aim standardization to use the most commun elements with Tiger II. Two alternatives were developed, one light (leichte) with a turret assembled to the back, weighing 76 tons and having a frontal shielding of 100mm, the other heavy (schwere) with a turret assembled in the center, a frontal shielding of 120mm and weighing 90 tons. Both were equipped with the gun of 105mm L/70 and a coaxial MG34. The last version resembled to Tiger II. The maximum speed estimated for the two machines was of 23km/h for the schwere modell and 27km/h for the leichte modell).

Adolf Hitler préféra bien entendu le Schwere Löwe. Le Lion (Löwe) fut par la suite repensé pour être armé du 150mm L/40 ou du 150mm L/37 (plus sûrement le 150mm KwK 44 L/38) et accueillir un blindage frontal de 140mm. Des chenilles très larges (900-1000mm) devaient être utilisées, permettant ainsi d'atteindre finalement les 30km/h sur route.

Very broad tracks (900-1000mm) was to be used, thus making it possible to finally reach the 30km/h on road.

Cependant fin 1942, le Löwe qui était en concurrence avec le Maus de Porsche fut abandonné. Les designers avaient également pensés à armer une version redessinée du Löwe du 88mm KwK L/71 du Tiger II avec un blindage frontal de 140mm. Cette version devait être capable d'atteindre les 35km/h malgré son poids de 90 tonnes grâce à un Maybach HL 230 P 30, V12 de 800ch. Le Löwe devait mesurer 7.74m de long (avec le canon), 3.83m de large et 3.08m de haut. Ce char devait éventuellement devenir le remplaçant du Tiger II. Cependant aucun de ces versions n'atteignirent l'étape du prototype.

This version was to be able to reach the 35km/h in spite of its weight of 90 tons thanks to Maybach HL 230 P 30, V12 of 800ch. Löwe was to measure 7.74m length (with the gun), 3.83m broad and 3.08m top. This tank was to possibly become the substitute of Tiger II. However none of these versions did not reach the stage of the prototype.
