VK.3601(H) / Kleine Tiger Heavy Tank

At the same time as the development of the VK30O1 (H), Hitler had invited German manufacturers to conceive a heavier tank capable to dominate any battlefield. The specifications specified the necessity of a weapon capable of penetrating into any armor plates at a distance of 1500 metres, an armor plating being enough to stop any anti-tank projectile known to the same distance, and the maximum speed of at least 40 kph.

The main weapon of the vehicle owed being Gerät 725, a cannon with conical soul firing conical rounds in tungsten. The VK3601 (H) had an excellent protection of armor with a thickness of 100 millimeters on all front walls, and of 60-80 millimeters on sides and behind. When it was ordered, this tank would have been extremely difficult to destroyannul for any Allies antitank gun in service. The VK3601 (H) developed from the VK3001 (H), used however eight axes with bigger road wheels, and the rollers of return had been abolished. The development of the cannon Gerät 725 had to be abandoned because of the scarcities of tungsten, what would have pulled lacks of ammunitions for the units on front. The only alternative weapon of the same available class was the excellent cannon KWK36, which had been developed from the antiaircraft/antitank flak 18. Henschel agreed so to develop a new vehicle to mount the KwK36, under name VK4501 ( H ).
