Panzerkampfwagen V Panther Medium Tank

Design: Engine Compartment

The engine located in the rear compartment was a liquid-cooled Maybach HL 230 P 30 (V12) of 23 liters, which produced 700 horsepower at 3000 rpm. This model had larger combustion chambers and was in fact a bored-out version of the Maybach HL 210, originally designed for the Panther Ausf.A/D1, but which generated insufficient power given the weight of the tank.

For maintenance, the engine was accessed via a large hatch on the center of the rear deck. Another circular hatch on the rear wall of the hull made it possible to reach the bottom of the engine. If necessary, all of the rear deck could be unbolted for access. Cooling grids and ventilators were laid out on both sides of the deck hatch. The manifolds and exhaust pipes, of which there several different patterns, were located on the back of the hull, and equipment storage boxes were located on both sides.

In an attempt to improve the tank’s mobility, various other engines were tested including an air-cooled MAN/Argus, a modified BMW plane engine and a Daimler-Benz diesel. However, none of these engines was a success.

Design: Suspension

The suspension of the Panther consisted of 8 interleaved double road wheels (so 16 in all), on each side. These road wheels were pressed discs in the form of plates, with full rubber edgings. Due to a growing shortage of rubber, the latest Ausf. G models had flat discs with elastic steeledgings, identical to those of the Tiger and Tiger II.

The first, third, fifth and seventh road wheels from the front were double wheels mounted back-to-back, while the second, fourth, sixth and eighth axles had double wheels with space in between the two wheels, to allow for the first type of wheel to sit in between them. Each axle was connected by an arm to a torsion bar. These bars were coupled in pairs, one left side and one right side bar. The torsion bars extended the full width of the hull, from one side of the floor to the other. The road wheels on the right side of the tank were placed behind their respective torsion bars whereas those on the left side were placed in front. The disposition of the road wheels was thus not symmetrical (like the Tiger). This arrangement gave an excellent suspension but maintenance was very complicated and tiring.

It’s worth noting that a hydrostatic and hydrodynamic suspension was coupled with a special filtering system, making it possible for the Panther to function in a chemically contaminated zone (Tauch Einrichtung). This was a unique ability at that time.

Design: Armor

The lower hull and the hull superstructure of the Panther were made in one single structure, by means of homogeneous armour plates assembled by welding. However the principal edges were reinforced by interlocking mortise joints, as with the Tiger. The armor plate was thickest on the glacis, 80 mm thick. This was set at an angle of 35° from the horizontal, intended to deflect shells upwards and away from the mantlet (100 to 110 mm thick). The superstructure of the Panther was of two types: the first had a level horizontal lower edge on the sides, with a projection protecting the fuel tank. This arrangement is seen on the Ausf. D and Ausf.A models. The second type had an oblique lower edge on the sides, seen on the Ausf.G model and offering better protection for the fuel tank.
