Panzerkampfwagen II Light Tank

Genesis

In July 1934, Waffenamt (Department of the material) ordered the creation of a tank of the class of the 10 tons in order to replace Panzer I while waiting for the plain production of Panzers III and IV. This tank was to be armed with the automatic gun of 20 mm able to shoot high-explosive and piercing rounds, assembled with a coaxial MG 34 (7.92 mm) on a turret with possibility of overall shooting. Many firms will be contacted to produce prototypes, like the firms, Krupp, MAN, Henschel and Daimler-Benz. In preoccupations of discretion, as for Panzer I, the project will be baptized Landwirtschaftlicher Schlepper 100 - La.S. 100 (farm tractor). This new project will be initially known as 2cm MG Panzerwagen or a VK 622 (Versuchkraftfahrzeug 622).

LKA II

The choice was made finally on the chassis of MAN surmounted by a superstructure realized by Daimler-Benz. In October 1935, the first complete steel prototype will be produced and tested and an order of 10 La.S. 100 will be carried out under the designation of Panzerkampfwagen II Ausf.a1.

Production

The following models were for the majority of the experimental models designed for the reconnaissance, produced in small quantities: Pz.Kpfw II Ausf.G (VK 901) was produced with 12 specimens, Pz.Kpfw II Ausf.H (VK 903) was produced to only single specimen, Pz.Kpfw II Ausf.J (VK 1601) was produced with 22 specimens whereas Pz.Kpfw II Ausf.M (VK 1301) was manufactured with 4 specimens. All these prototypes were constructed between April 1941 and August 1942 by MAN. April 30, 1941, was developed Panzerprogramm 41 which envisaged the manufacture of 3500 Gefechtsaufklarungs (heavy reconnaisance-battle tank), 10950 tanks of reconnaissance and 2300 tanks of observation. This program will be however removed in September 1942. Let us note that Panzers II Ausf.J were useful in 12th Pz.Division on the Eastern front and that a specimen will be converted into Bergepanzer II ausf.J.

Let us note that the production of chassis amply outclassed the real assembly of tank. That is explained by the little of appropriations that Panzer II had as battle tank but as the chassis had amply proven reliable on the ground, it will be produced in a number to carry out good numbers of conversions.
