A33 Excelsior Heavy Tank

Que dire du A33 Excelsior Heavy Assault Tank, sinon qu'il s'agit avant tout d'une version lourde du Cruiser Tank Mk.VIII Cromwell. Le premier prototype de ce char fut réalisé par English electric en 1943. Il utilisait des chenilles et une suspension d'origine américaine (M6 Heavy Tank). Le second prototype était équipé d'une suspension plus britannique (basée sur celle du Cromwell mais élargie).

La caisse était basée sur celle du Cromwell et l'armement principal était un canon de 6-pdr (57 mm) ou de 75 mm OQF. L'Excelsior pesait 45 tonnes et avait un blindage maximum de 114 mm. L'équipage était de 5 homme et son moteur Meteor de 600 cv lui permettait une vitesse de pointe de 39 km/h. Le blindage permettait de classé ce char dans les chars lourds, mais son armement était totalement insuffisant pour pouvoir se mesurer aux chars lourds allemands et le projet fut abandonné en 1944.

The hull was based on that of Cromwell and the principal armament was a gun of 6-pdr (57 mm) or 75 mm OQF. Excelsior weighed 45 tons and had a maximum shielding of 114 mm. The crew was 5 man and its Meteor engine of 600 hp allowed it a maximum speed of 39 km/h. The shielding allowed classified this tank in the heavy tanks, but its armament was completely insufficient against the German heavy tanks and the project was abandoned in 1944.
