Infantry Tank Mark II Matilda '2'

in Action

Matilda II behaved very well during the retirement on Dunkirk in 1940. Matilda in France was well too rare (3 squadrons of 3 platoons only, forming the 1st brigade of Matilda) and was well too badly employed (by small numbers) to profit from its superiority on the panzers of the time. They is unhappy because its shielding made it quasi invulnerable to the tractor drawn anti-tank guns or assembled on armoured tanks which had Germany in 1940. The standard anti-tank gun of Wehrmacht and Panzertruppe was the small gun of 37 mm (also mounted on Panzer III, principal tank of the Germans in 1940), well incompetent to bore the shielding of Matilda at acceptable range. It is reported that Matilda survived more than 40 direct impacts of projectiles of 37 mm at the time of the same confrontation! Only too rare Panzers IV and their howitzer of 75 mm KwK L/24 and the famous anti-aircraft guns (Flak) of 88 mm (fortunately available ones in abundance), was able of it. After Dunkirk the 1st brigade of Matilda was sent in Egypt and employed in the first confrontations against the Italians. After Dunkirk Matilda I was completely withdrawn from the service and Matilda II as from this time was called Matilda by the troop quite simply. One second brigade was formed then and employed in Erythrée, North Africa and Creta.

During the engagements in Libya in 1940-1941 it was much higher than all than the Italians were able to oppose to it like armoured tanks or anti-tank guns. During this period it gained the flattering nickname of "King of the battle field". This superiority of material lasted until the middle of the year 1941, when that the first elements of Afrika Korps made their appearance on the North-African theatre with in particular their famous guns of 88 mm Flak. This weapon which had already shown its anti-tank capacities in France, was able to pulverize Matilda at distances where the poor 2-pdr of this last was unable to reach its target. Become obsolete, Matilda disappeared consequently from the service in first line because it was impossible to install there a more powerful weapon because of the narrowness of the turret. The last operation where one seen Matilda in action was the first battle of El Alamein (Egypt) in July 1942. Matilda thus left its place in Grants and Shermans.

Matilda was also used by the Australian forces which used them in the Pacific, and also like training tank until 1953. The Australian appreciated particularly the very useful the flame-thrower version in the jungle against the Japanese kamikazes infantrymen. The Australian used also much Matilda Dozer to open ways for the other armoured tanks in the jungle. The Soviets also used some Matilda (very little actually) but the gun of 40 mm did not enthusiasm them particularly. The Russians sent reports to the British announcing that the running gears was often blocked in snow.

Despite all these limits and its fast declassification like tank, Matilda was the only British tank used throughout the war (first at the last day) even if it were in secondary roles since 1942. Very rare are the tanks of any country which can say some in the same way.
