ISU-122 Assault Gun

in Action

From the spring 1944, the ISU-122 with the ISU-152 was incorporated in the heavy self-propelled artillary regiments (TSAP) in order to replace the aging SU-152. All these regiments received the Guard designation. The Russians had 56 of these unities at the end of the war. Every regiment had 21 ISU-122 or 152 or again a mixture one of the two models. The two self-propelled guns were used for the same missions. It is necessary nevertheless to note that the ISU-122 had superior anti-tank capacities than the ISU-152 and was if need used as tank destroyer.

Certain western specialists considered in fact the ISU-122 as a tank destroyer as the SU-100 or the SU-85, while that the ISU-152 was considered by all as an assault gun. For the Russians, both of them were assault guns and principally were used as such. The ISU-122 as the ISU-152 was particularly well conceived for the urban fight because of its firepower and the terrible effects of its explosive rounds.

The first mass usage of the ISU-122, was during the summer 1944 during the Russian offensive "Bagration" that used not less than 14 regiments of tanks ISU-122/152 . These tanks there shown their effectiveness against the German tanks Tigers and Panthers (during this offensive the half of the sPz-Abt 502 (Tigers) was destroyed by ISU-122/152 ). The regiments of tanks ISU were used jointly with the unities of battle tanks and the infantry in order to support their assaults. At the time of the German counter-offensives the two models constituted the major defensive weapon of the Soviets.
