SU-101/102 Tank Destroyer

Design

The SU-101 and the SU-100 were the one of the rare Russian designs of self-propelled guns with a rear combat compartment rear and a front engine-transmission compartment. The hull of the two models was assembled by welding and composed of sloped rolled steel plates for better ballistic qualities. The combat compartment had a frontal armor of 122 mm while the hull had a frontal armor of 90 mm. Lateral armor was of 75 mm and rear armor was of 40 mm. The access to the combat compartment was done through a door to the back of this one or by a circular hatch (for the commanderr) on the roof, endowed with an observation sight and of a circular mount for heavy machine gun of 12.7 mm DShK.

This gun was supplied with 35 projectiles and coupled with a telescopic TSh-19 sight and a panoramic periscope. The anti-aircraft heavy machine gun was supplied with 450 rounds.

The was mounted in the direction of the length, to the front of the vehicle. The post of the driver was situated to the left of the engine. The vehicle was equipped of an a little modified transmission of T-34 and its suspension originated of the T-44. The sprocket-wheels were those of the T-34. The SU-101 weighed 34.1 tons and was able to attain 54 km/h. Its crew was composed from 4 men: the driver, the commander, the gunner and the loader. The external communication was assured by a radio 9-RS and the internal communication by intercoms TPU-3bisF or by luminous signals.

The SU-102 was armed of the 122 mm D-25S-44 endowed with an elevation from 0° to +18.5° and a traverse of 19° to the left as to right. Because of the narrow combat t compartment, it could embark only 28 ammo (in a piece to the opposite of the 2 pieces ammo of the IS-2 and ISU-122). The SU-102 weighed 34.8 tons.

The SU-101 and the SU-102 were superior to all self-propelled guns existing because of their more compact dimensions, their manoeuvrability, their better protection (superior to the one of the IS-2 and ISU-152 for example). The uniform distribution of the weight on the road wheels reduced the fatigue of the suspension and the location to the back of the combat compartment allowed the instalation of a very long barrel this that obtained a bigger initial velocity and of better penetration capacities.

The biggest defect of these tanks was than the post of the driver was just next to the engine-transmission compartment returning the try of the driver the very difficult and inhuman in case of strong heats. The combat compartment was equally too narrow and the ustilisation of the principal armament affected the integrity of the roof of the compartment especially on the SU-102 with its canon of 122 mm.
