T-44 Medium Tank

Development

T-44/100

T-44 was also armed with the gun with 122 mm D-25-44T similar to the standard model D-25. The gun of 122 mm put at fire 1-piece rounds on the contrary of D-25, in order to improve rate of shooting. T-44-2 was tested for the first time in February-March 1944 and it was a failure because of the defects of the gun. The D-25-44T was thus returned to the factory to be improved there.

During April-May 1944, the tests continued, but the rate of shooting did not exceed by the 2-3 shootings per minute. Moreover the turret was too narrow for an optimal use of the gun and space inside was too cramped for ammunition of this size (24 rounds max.). The Russians decided that the gun of 122 mm was too heavy to be assembled on an medium tank and was to be reserved for the heavy tanks. The development of T-44-2 was thus stopped.
