T-34/76 Medium Tank

in Action

The T-34/76 was one of the armored combat vehicles, essential of the second World War. It took a more important part in the victory of the Red army on the eastern front and usually Allies' forces. To the moment of its apparition, it was truly revolutionary with its sloped armor and jostled terribly the German Panzerdivisions of which the Panzers III (short 50 mm guns) and Panzers IV (short 75 mm guns) were incapable to compete with it. It shown the way to follow to the Germans in the development of armored vehicles, provoking the realization of its direct competitor the Pz.Kpfw V Panther.

The essays of 1939 had shown that the T-34 was by far superior to the models of same tonnage from this time. This is therefore logically that it was chosen as battle tank standard for the Brigades of tanks and intend for the mass production. The T-34 was quick, very movable and endowed with an outline rather low, a very thick armor for a fast tank and a fire power excellente for the era. These characteristics did the T-34/76 a tank to the potential tremendous and the better model to the world. The one of the bigger defects of this tank was its too narrow turret, being able to welcome only two crewmen. That had for consequence, that the commander was too solicited by multiple tasks. The international degradation did to enter in production as early as December 1939 while the development was again unfinished. At the time of Barbarossa, the Russians possessed only 1100 copies and little had been delivered to the units to the front.

The T-34/76 known its baptism of the fire on the southern sector against the Panzerdivisions more advanced and constitued for them a very bad surprise. Nevertheless the Russians as the Allies in France, used their tanks single or by pairs this that constitued a weak obstacle to the masses of Panzers that the Germans launched to the attack. Nevertheless, this tank did to lose to the Germans their illusions concerning their technical superiority and had an important negative moral impact.

While the German advance slowed down and weakened on the vast spaces of the eastern front, the Panzerdivisions became more and more vulnerable to the counter-offensives and to the harassyng operations in which ones the T-34/76 excelled. The production factories the more to the west were moved behind the Oural this that permit to maintain the production of the T-34/76. Many modifications were brought to the T-34 to erase the defects and because of the numerous factories devoted to the construction program (42 establishments altogether (subcontractors equally)).

In 1943, the German launched new models to take again the supremacy of equipment. In fact the Tiger then the Panther shown their fire power and the superiority of their armor. Nevertheless the Russians were henceforth some measures to replace the quality by the quantity and the massive employment of T-34s shown itself very effective to win the victory at the time of the biggest battle of tanks of the history to Koursk in July 1943. Even the Tiger did not be under cover of the gun of 76.2 mm of the T-34 but nevertheless to weak distance. As the Sherman, the T-34/76 in exploited very efficiently its numerical advantage on the German heavy Panzers.

Nevertheless the Russians weren't totally satisfied and an important revision was realized at the end of 1943. In fact a more powerful calibre, the 85 mm D-5T was mounted in a new turret for three crewmen, giving birth to the T-34/85. The T-34/85 was superior to the T-34/76 and was sufficient to oppose the tanks Tigers and Panthers. The T-34/85 preserved the mobility of the T-34/76 but with a bigger fire power. The production of the T-34/85 replaced completely the one of the T-34/76 from the summer 1944. About 35000 T-34/76s were made, more than the Germans could some to destroy. Alone the Sherman put to compete with it on this point.

Because of excellent characteristics of the T-34/76, the Germans didn't to hesitate to use the captured T-34/76s in their own units to compensate their losses, despite the risk evident of confusion.
