M37 Priest 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage

The crew of M37 was composed of 7 men: the driver sitting in the front-left corner of the hull, the commander and the 5 gun crewmen installed in the compartment of combat. The front cockpit was occupied by the pilot, the Hydramatic transmission comprising 12 speeds (8-4) and the final command device which transmitted the power to the front sprocket-wheels mounted perpendicular to the transmission and the instruments of control and steering. For his vision the pilot had a rotary episcope on the only oval trap door of access preserved compared to M24. The inclined nose of M24 was preserved just as it is, safe forthe machine-gun assembled on ball which was removed. The compartment of combat entirely occupied all the remainder of the tank covering the engine compartment to the back. This compartment of combat vaster than that of M7 Priest allowed a greater storage of ammunition. Indeed M37 transported 126 projectiles of 105 mm instead of 69 for M7. The armament consisted of an howitzer of 105 mm M4 assembled on M5 mounting assembled in front of the compartment of combat a little shifted on the right and a machine-gun of 12.7 mm installed on a cupola of shooting located at the right side of the principal weapon. As for M7, this cupola in the shape of pulpit of church got for M37 the nickname of Priest (priest).

One notices the prolongation of the compartment of combat to the top of the engine compartment

T85E1 type: guide central, double-goupille, caoutchouc renforcé, chevron

The engine of M37 was Twin Cadillac Series 44T24 (gasoline) of 16 cylinders developing 296 hp to 3200 rpm. M37 could reach the 56 km/h on road and with its 500 L fuel to run 160 km. The suspension as on M24 was with torsion bars, with on each side a front sprocket-wheel, five independent double-road wheels, a back idler and 4 return rollers (M24 had only 3 return rollers). Compared to M24, the provision of the shock absorbers was different.

Types of tracks assembled on M37:

T72 type: Central guide, single pin, steel bushed rubber, grousers
Width: 410 mm - Pitch: 140 mm - Links: 2 x 75 - Track ground contact: 2.8512 m
T85E1 type: Central guide, double pin, bushed rubber, chevron
Width: 410 mm - Pitch: 140 mm - Links: 2 x 75 - Track ground contact: 2.8512 m

A version of M37, which never exceeded the experimental stage, was equipped with a chemical mortar of 107 mm in the place of the howitzer of 105 mm.

M37 because of its weak shielding, not exceeding the 13 mm and its open superstructure could not operate in first line. It was like M7 used like a traditional piece of artillery far behind the tanks or like exploitation vheicles to reduce the last places defended by the enemy or like assault gun counters strengthened places.
