M26 Pershing Medium Tank

Design

The suspension of M26 Pershing consisted of 6 independent double-road wheels assembled on torsion bars. The two first and the last two road wheeks were provided with shock absorbers. Rare fact for an American model, the sprocket-wheels were assembled to the rear of the tank. M26 was also equipped with and hydraulic torque converters with planetary clutch of reduction. The transmission was cletarc type with 3 forward speeds and 1 reverse speed. The tracks made up of two lines of rubber-steel or any steel links, are provided with central guides. These 580 mm tracks offered an acceptable ground pressure, 0.878 kg/cm2, less than a lot of Shermans.

The front compartment accomodates two members of crew, the driver and his assistant. The driver having sat on the left and his assistant on the right. Both have of two episcopes and a trap door of access on the hull front deck. The assistant can fire a Browning machine-gun of 7.62 mm mounted on ball on the glacis of the tank. The nose of the tank is made of two moulded parts, welded between them. The glacis has a very marked slope. The nose does not protect as on the other models the system from final transmission, laid out on M26 to the back of the tank, behind the engine. On the contrary of Sherman, the superstructure does not occupy the entirety of the width of the tank but remains confined between the two tracks, which limits the possibilities of storage inside the tank. Moreover it is very low, hardly visible.

M26 Pershing had a crew of five men. The commander, the gunner and the loader had sat in the turret. The latter developed starting from the T23 turret was equipped with a cupola of commander and an oval trap door for the loader on the roof. There was also a small trap door for the ejection of the casings on the left side of the turret. On the cupola, the commander had for his vision 6 openings with armoured panes with laminated glass. Two rotary episcopes were also at disposal of the loader and the gunner. For transport or transits, the turret was turned backwards and the gun was maintained motionless by a gun lock. The gun of 90 mm M3 assembled on Pershing was developed starting from the anti-aircraft gun of 90 mm (like the 88 mm of Tiger). This extraordinary weapon enabled it to destroy any enemy tank. The gun was assembled on a M67 mounting equipped with a broad semicircular external shield. This shield had the annoying practice to deviate the blows which it received in its lower part towards the turret ring. However the Americans had knowledge of the German experiments and innovations on this point. The gun of 90 mm was coupled with a Browning machine-gun of 7.62 mm. On the roof a Browning anti-aircraft machine-gun of 12.7 mm was assembled on a pedestal. The stock of ammunition included 70 rounds of 90 mm, 5000 rounds of 7.62 mm and 550 rounds of 12.7 mm. The rounds of 90 mm were stored in the hull or to the back of the turret.
