Light Tanks Le char léger français FT, fut le seul char de cette catégorie qui fut utilisés par les Américains durant la première guerre mondiale. French Light tank FT, was the only tank of this category which was used by the Americans during the First World War.
Le seul char léger que les Américains utilisèrent en Europe en 1917-1918 fut le char français Renault FT. Les Américains avaient pourtant acheté la licence du modèle français pour en réaliser un copie américaine mais cette dernière ne fut jamais prête pour la fin de la guerre. La version américaine fut baptisé six-ton tank M1917. Sur le M1917, les roues en bois cerclées d' acier du modèle français furent remplacées par des roues totalement en acier, un nouveau moteur fut placé ainsi qu' une cloison pare-feu entre le moteur et l'équipage. Le modèle américain disposait de plus de fentes de vision que le char français. Tous les M1917 étaient équipés de la tourelle octogonale assemblée par rivetage alors que le FT était doté d' une tourelle ronde moulée. Le M1917 était soit armé du canon de 37 mm M1916 ou d' une mitrailleuse de 7.62 mm (.30cal) Marlin tank machine gun qui fut remplacée plus tard par une Browning M1919 MG du même calibre. En fait sur les 952 exemplaires produits à partir d' octobre 1918, 374 furent armés du canon de 37 mm et 526 de la mitrailleuse de 7.62 mm. Le reste (50 exemplaires) furent transformés en char de signalisation, sans armement, doté d' un poste radio dans une superstructure fixe. The only light tank that the Americans used in Europe in 1917-1918 was the French tank Renault FT. The Americans had however bought the licence of the French model to realize an American copy of it but the latter was never ready for the end of the war. The American version was baptized six-tone M1917 tank. On M1917, the wheels out of wooden ringed with steel of the French model were replaced by steel wheels, a new engine was installed thus wall fire protection between the engine and the crew. The American model had more slits of vision than the French tank. All M1917 were equipped with the octagonal turret assembled by riveting whereas the FT was equipped with a cast round turret. M1917 was armed with the gun of 37 mm M1916 or a machine-gun of 7.62 mm (.30cal) Marlin tank machine gun which was replaced later by a Browning M1919 MG of the same caliber. In fact on the 952 specimens produced from October 1918, 374 were armed with the gun of 37 mm and 526 of the machine-gun of 7.62 mm. The remainder (50 specimens) were transformed into signal tank, without armament, equipped with a radio station in a fixed superstructure.
Le M1917A1 est une version dotée d' un moteur plus puissant, le Franklin Series 145 à refroidissement par air. Grâce à ce moteur la vitesse put être augmentée jusqu' à 14-15 km/h. La partie arrière du char fut allongé pour accueillir le nouveau moteur. Le char fut équipé d' un self-starter et le moteur, la transmission et les 'embrayages furent montés en une seule unité. The M1917A1 is a version equipped with a more powerful engine, Franklin Series 145 with air cooling. Thanks to this engine speed could be increased until to 14-15 km/h. The back part of the tank was lengthened to accomodate the new engine. The tank was equipped with self-starter and the engine, transmission and clutches were assembled in only one unit.
Premier char léger conçu par les Américains. C'était en fait une chenillette de deux hommes armée d'une mitrailleuse de 7.62 mm (.30cal) Browning M1919. Le pilote était installé à droite et le mitrailleur à gauche. Ce petit char fut produit à seulement 15 exemplaires, dont un fut envoyé en France pour être testé sur le terrain. Cependant le Tank Corps fut insatisfait par les résultats et le contrat de 15000 véhicules fut annulé à l'Armistice. First light tank designed by the Americans. It was in fact a 2-man tankette armed with a 7.62 mm (.30cal) Browning M1919 machine gun. The driver was installed right and the machine-gunner on the left. This small tank was produced only 15 copies, one of which was sent to France to be tested on the field. However the Tank Corps was dissatisfied by the results and the contract of 15000 vehicles was cancelled at the Armistice.
